When a Device Fails, Care Doesn’t Stop: Enabling Remote Recovery in Clinical Environments

Intel vPro® gives healthcare IT teams out-of-band tools for recovering failed endpoints remotely, helping clinicians return to delivering care sooner.

An endpoint failure inside a hospital or clinic can quickly become a patient care problem. When a clinician cannot reach an electronic health record or complete documentation, the disruption can affect every subsequent part of the care journey.

Endpoint recovery is therefore a critical part of clinical care resilience, and not merely an IT help desk function.

Intel vPro® provides out-of-band access when an operating system won’t load, while Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors add fleet intelligence intended to identify potential hardware problems earlier.

What Happens When Downtime Affects Bedside Care?

Many clinicians are already under immense pressure due to staffing constraints. A failed endpoint can impede access to patient records and force staff to use slower, manual processes, which can delay charting further, even after the device comes back online.

“Whenever these devices go down, it really pauses the entire workflow for medical staff,” says David Bartley, channel account manager for CDW-Government at Intel. “If they can’t get into their patient charting system, they must go back to paper.”

That completely disrupts the care cycle, which limits the number of patients a clinician can see.

Recovery Beyond the Operating System

Conventional remote support software usually depends on several components running correctly on the endpoint, Bartley notes. If the OS fails, the agent used to establish the remote session may also become unavailable.

“Traditional remote management tools normally require an operating system to be present, a user session and a downloaded agent,” Bartley says. “When you get a ‘blue screen of death,’ all of those are unavailable to you.”

Intel vPro®’s Active Management Technology operates separately from the OS. If Intel vPro® was activated before the failure, and the device retains power and network access, administrators can reach it through Intel Endpoint Management Assistant or Intel vPro® Fleet Services.

Keyboard-video-mouse (KVM) capabilities let IT staff power on the endpoint, inspect its boot sequence and enter the BIOS to distinguish a storage problem from a corrupted OS image.

“We can see exactly what’s going on from boot-up and the splash screen, all the way to the point where it loads the operating system,” Bartley says.

IT Has Secure Control at Scale

Remote access below the OS must be governed carefully when devices contain protected health information. Intel provides client and administrator control modes that determine whether a user must authorize a support session.

In client control mode, a code appears locally but remains hidden from the remote administrator. The person physically present must provide it before the administrator can control the endpoint.

Healthcare organizations commonly favor this approach because of sensitive data, Bartley says.

“There’s a code only the person sitting right in front of the device can see,” he says. “It doesn’t appear in the KVM session with the administrator; the client must provide that code before it allows the administrator to see everything within the device.”

A consistent, activated Intel vPro® fleet can extend the same recovery process to nursing stations, mobile clinicians and remote care teams far from an IT support location.

“Any of those devices can be remotely managed, regardless of whether the operating system is present,” Bartley says. “Think about remote patient care, where clinicians are traveling to the patient and may be 75 miles from any IT help desk.”

Health Systems Can Predict Device Failure Earlier

Intel Hardware Shield helps verify BIOS integrity during startup, while Threat Detection Technology (DTECT) monitors processor and memory behavior for activity that could signal ransomware or fileless attacks.

With Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors, Intel vPro® Device IQ adds telemetry about performance, responsiveness, use and hardware health. A newer, standardized fleet can give IT teams more consistent visibility than a mixed-generation environment.

“It takes all of this data and creates a summary that allows us to more proactively forecast potential device failures,” Bartley says. “It may identify overheating that suggests we need to service the device before it completely shuts down.”

Healthcare organizations can then schedule service around care delivery rather than respond after a failure has interrupted it.

Healthcare Organizations Can Better Measure Recovery

IT leaders can compare performance before and after Intel vPro® activation with a number of metrics, including mean time to repair, cases resolved without onsite visits, shipping expenses, help desk labor and clinical time lost.

Intel vPro® Fleet Services has reduced activation from 24 steps to six and moved supporting compute infrastructure into Intel’s cloud, Bartley says, noting that CDW’s Digital Experience services can also help healthcare organizations activate the capability.

A shorter recovery interval can return clinicians to accessing patient records, documentation and care coordination while reducing the manual work that follows an outage.

Leaders should compare the productivity lost while clinicians wait for a replacement device or work on paper with the impact of restoring service in 45 minutes instead of a day and a half, Bartley adds. Those figures can help organizations connect endpoint recovery to both clinical care resilience and operational costs.

“They can really measure it with their support desk — not just time to repair, but also cost of repair,” Bartley says.
