Staff use the scanners to instantly read each medication’s barcode. The system then prompts the printers to generate an RFID label, ready for application. A process that once consumed two minutes of a pharmacist’s valuable time per item now takes a mere seven seconds.

This shift also allows technicians to handle the tagging, freeing clinical experts to focus on direct patient care. Once tagged, staff locate items instantly on shelves with handheld mobile computers and RFID sleds. Instead of spending hours scanning individual barcodes, technicians walk into a storage area, wave the sled and immediately capture every tagged medication. One team member likened the device to something from a science fiction movie: You point it and can see what’s there, what’s missing and what’s nearing expiration.

Beyond the Bottom Line

This intelligent automation produces significant outcomes. The hospital achieved 99.99% accuracy in its cabinet inventory. It saved $14 million on expensive clotting factor medications in a single year. By detecting expiring medications early, the pharmacy team uses every vial efficiently, providing necessary treatments while purchasing less. This success extends beyond the hospital’s walls.

Jeffrey Wagner, Texas Children’s Hospital’s vice president of pharmacy, explains that his team now shares inventory data for pediatric cancer drugs with seven other children’s hospitals. When one facility faces a shortage, they can redirect medications where they have the greatest need. This creates a more resilient and connected healthcare ecosystem. Innovation continues with ideas such as temperature-sensitive tags that signal when a drug gets too warm and lighting tags that illuminate on command to help clinicians find the right vial to save a child’s life.
