The healthcare industry is getting more connected with each passing day and gearing up for the Internet of Things. As 73 percent of businesses writ large are using IoT data to improve business processes, according to a recent Cisco study, the technology holds huge promise for the health industry, which boasts more connected devices than most other industries.
“An average hospital room will have between 15 and 20 medical devices, and almost all of them will be networked,” Aruba Networks Product Marketing Manager Rick Reid told HITInfrastructure. “That’s a pretty high density if you think about the size of an ICU room, which is usually about 15’x15’ with 20 devices in it — and the room next door has 20 devices in it. A ward typically has 20 beds, so that’s quite a lot of devices in a relatively small area.”
Moving beyond the hospital room, connected technology could also serve to empower seniors, allowing them to record and access their own health information as they become more comfortable with technology, TechRepublic reports.
Moreover, the data from all these devices is becoming more accessible as companies begin to make healthcare analytics more digestible. IBM, for example, recently announced the availability of its bare metal servers on the IBM cloud, which can support healthcare analytics as organizations begin to demand more storage for connected devices and Big Data, HITInfrastructure reports.
