HealthTech Magazine - Technology Solutions That Drive Healthcare en 3 Methods for Minimizing Security Risks in Healthcare
Healthcare cybercrime is on the rise. Federal records show that 510 major data breaches were reported last year, with each involving 500 or more records. That’s a 37 percent increase over 2018.

It isn’t the only spike: With the exception of 2015, data breaches of this magnitude have increased annually since the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights began publishing figures in 2009.

The total number of breached records rose from 13,947,909 two years ago to 41,335,889 in 2019, with the recent figure representing 12 percent of the U.S. population.

Meanwhile, medical records are selling for up to $1,000 online, and efforts to repair the damage from the loss of personal information can be costly and time-consuming.

Still, some organizations may struggle with knowing how and where to take action. Consider adopting the following strategies to help identify your weakest links and to better protect your organization’s network — and those who use it.
Andrew Steger How Community Healthcare Facilities Are Prepping for Disruption
The current health crisis has brought unprecedented challenges for IT teams, especially those at local community healthcare facilities with fewer than 300 beds. And many organizations find that the best way to achieve these goals is by opting for a hybrid cloud model.

Nutanix, a multicloud solutions company, recently released the healthcare industry findings of its 2019 Enterprise Cloud Index (ECI) Report, highlighting healthcare organizations’ plans for adopting private, hybrid and public clouds. Indeed, the findings show that the majority of organizations (87 percent) view hybrid cloud as their ideal IT operating model.

Embracing the cloud has become essential for organizations hoping to deliver the most advanced care for their patients; however, IT teams also understand that compliance must remain top of mind — and that’s influencing future cloud model adoption plans. The industry findings show that over 50 percent of healthcare respondents cited regulations governing data storage as a top factor influencing their organization’s cloud decisions.

As part of HealthTech’s virtual HIMSS coverage, we spoke with Cheryl Rodenfels, CTO for Americas Healthcare at Nutanix, about the ECI findings. She offered insights on what makes hybrid cloud so appealing for healthcare organizations and why, despite many seeing this model as more secure, organizations have been slow to adopt.
Andrew Steger How Sentara Healthcare Is Making the Most of Its Virtualization Strategy
Virtualization is helping Sentara Healthcare and other organizations improve scalability, save money and introduce remote work options for staff — benefits that can be critical during a health emergency.
Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare: Why Transparency Matters
The growing presence of artificial intelligence during the care delivery process continues to show potential for reduced physician burnout and more personalized treatment.

Progress is coming in many forms, including automated scan analyses, symptom-checking chatbots and extra help with medical coding and billing.

“At the end of the day, if we’re looking at how we can impact care and we want to do so in a way that’s going to be helpful,” said Ed Shaffer, healthcare and life sciences informatics director at Dell EMC, “then I think we’re in a state where we can’t continue to do things the way we’ve done them.”

The shift is underway: 85 percent of Americans commonly use AI in some form, a GE survey finds, and the use of AI could create $150 billion in annual savings for the U.S. healthcare economy by 2026, according to a recent Accenture report.

Still, advancing the movement requires strategy among developers to determine safe and appropriate use cases for AI — as well as staff who must learn to integrate the augmented offerings into their workflows and justify those functions to the public.

That was the key takeaway from a recent panel with Shaffer and other healthcare thought leaders, held virtually due to the cancellation of the HIMSS20 conference, on AI’s evolving capacity to enhance clinical decision-making.

On the one hand, AI can aid lifesaving insights and efficiencies. But recipients must be fully informed, and all parties need to acknowledge that care can’t be fully outsourced.

“Fairness, accounts and transparency need to go into the design and your relationship with patients and their caregivers,” Corinne Stroum, a director at KenSci, said during the panel discussion. Discover how clinical communication and collaboration tools, when implemented correctly, can help nurses provide better care outcomes and improve job satisfaction.
Managing Cloud Consumption for Optimal Results
The public cloud can simplify IT environments. But what happens when an enterprise’s cloud environment itself becomes maddeningly complex?

As organizations across industries have increased their cloud spending and made the public cloud a more integral part of their operations, a number of inefficiencies have cropped up. The sources of these complications range from poor design to a lack of governance, and these inefficiencies can lead to negative outcomes that include cost overruns, lack of visibility into the environment and security vulnerabilities.

An effective cloud management strategy can help organizations to manage their environments more efficiently. Such a strategy should include plans to control costs and optimize application performance, as well as to detail who is responsible for which aspects of cloud security.

A variety of solutions and services can help organizations to implement and manage this strategy over time. These solutions include cloud management platforms, application and performance monitoring, backup and recovery, and other tools. Many organizations find it helpful to work closely with a third-party cloud management partner with broad and deep expertise managing cloud environments.

Learn more by downloading our white paper: "Managing Cloud Consumption for Optimal Results"
